Is hypnotherapy and hypnosis like stage hypnosis?
Many people have heard of hypnotherapy and hypnosis, but thanks to TV, films and mainly stage hypnosis, there are a lot of myths and misconceptions about what they really are.
You’ve probably seen stage hypnotists getting people to bark like a dog or eat a raw onion like it’s an apple. But what’s the truth behind it?
Here’s what you need to know:
- Stage hypnosis is for entertainment – it’s carefully designed to select the most suggestible people.
- No one can be hypnotised against their will – volunteers go through suggestibility tests before going on stage.
- You won’t do anything against your beliefs or morals – hypnosis doesn’t make you lose control.
So, if a stage hypnotist asked someone to do something embarrassing, they would only do it if they were already comfortable doing so.
🔹 The Difference? Stage hypnosis is an entertainment show, while hypnotherapy uses hypnosis for real, tangible therapeutic benefits – like helping people change habits, overcome fears and improve their lives.
What People Want to Know About Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis
These are the most common questions I get asked from people who have never had hypnotherapy before:
- Is hypnosis real? – Yes! It’s a scientifically recognised and proven altered state of awareness.
- Am I in control? – Absolutely. You’ll always be aware and in control.
- Will I tell you my secrets? – Only if you want to! Hypnosis doesn’t make you say anything against your will.
What Is Hypnotherapy?
With hypnotherapy, we work with the unconscious (subconscious) mind to remove unwanted habits, fears and deeply programmed belief systems.
We do this in different ways, such as hypnosis, NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and some breathing techniques.
This means that you have all these tools in your toolkit to help and empower yourself to be at your best emotional, physical and dental health for the rest of your life, whenever you want and need.
What Is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation, concentration and focus. It allows us to bypass the critical, analytical, conscious mind, which sometimes gets in the way of us progressing, and communicate with the unconscious part of the mind – where lasting, positive change happens.
In fact, every time you experience hypnosis, you tend to go deeper because your mind becomes more familiar with the process.
It’s completely natural and safe—in fact, we all enter hypnotic states in everyday life!
Have you ever:
- Been so engrossed in a book or movie that you lost track of time?
- Driven on a motorway and realised you don’t remember passing certain exits?
- Daydreamed so deeply that you forgot what was happening around you?
These are all examples of hypnosis happening naturally in everyday life—without you even realising it!
Why Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis Are Completely Safe
Some people feel a little nervous before their first hypnotherapy session, and that’s totally normal. That’s why I take the time to:
✔ Answer all your questions before we begin.
✔ Go at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Hypnosis is an altered state of awareness, but it’s completely safe and natural when done by a qualified and registered hypnotherapist – like me!
All you need to do is sit back, close your eyes and listen to my voice as I guide you into a state of deep, wonderful calmness and relaxation.
