Hypnotherapy and Fertility Case Study
How hypnotherapy and fertility go very well together
Mrs E came to see me regarding fertility and sleep issues. She had already been through 4 rounds of IVF. Two frozen embryos were being implanted in 7 weeks’ time at the time of her first appointment.
There were complications with:
- low egg reserve
- blood clotting
- sleep as a result of being on steroids – but she had had sleep issues since she was a child
- Immunology treatment with drips
The emotional issues were:
- Phobia of hospitals and needles – as a result of having an operation when she was 5 years old
- Isolation from friends and relatives
- Feelings of loss and emptiness
After the first session, Mrs E reported that she was sleeping a bit better. We dealt with the biggest issue for her at that moment - feeling terrified that she would never have a biological child.
By the third session, she was feeling calmer and sleeping a lot better. Between the sessions, she had a smear, which brought up old negative feelings. So we got rid of the severe anxiety she had about the speculum.
By the fourth session, Mrs E told me that she was able to deal with anxiety better and her sleep had improved so much. We dealt with her feeling comfortable when she has to go to places and events where there are children.
At the fifth session, we prepared for the drip for a soya protein-based solution for immunology that Mrs E was having the next day. I also showed her how to temporarily numb the area of skin so that she wouldn’t feel any discomfort when she had a needle inserted.
At the next session, she reported that the drip had gone amazingly well and her blood test also went fine. Mrs E was feeling apprehensive about the upcoming transfer and was worried that if it didn’t work, she would be letting her partner down. We did the necessary techniques to help her.
One of the embryos didn’t make it but Mrs E managed her response well. The anaesthetist couldn’t believe the transformation and progress she had made. We then dealt with the anxiety and the fear of not being pregnant and having to continue going through IVF.
Unfortunately, the result was negative, she was not pregnant. However, she was a lot less angry this time, her resilience was better and she felt much stronger. She was making plans for the next IVF and she hadn’t blamed herself (as she had done in the past).
Mrs E and her husband then decided to go for IVF again but with a new clinic. I helped her to deal with the negative emotions which surfaced about starting the process again and the uncertainty of it.
She was having 4 progesterone injections on a daily basis in the run up to the transfer and she was in absolute agony. When she came to see me, she could not get comfortable and could not stop moving around. I helped her to control the pain level from 10/10 to 3/10, which of course was much more manageable.
In her final session with me, six months after her first appointment, she told me she was pregnant! We dealt with the anxiety that her pregnancy will be taken away.
Eight months later, Mrs E sent me text telling me that she had given birth to a beautiful baby girl and attached a photograph with the following message:
“Thank you for all of your support. I drew massively on the work we did last year in the final weeks of pregnancy and during the rather extended 3 day labour I had that became far more medicalised than I’d hoped. The techniques we practised helped to keep me grounded, present and calm when faced with some very challenging medical situations and decisions. I really couldn’t have coped in the way I did had I not had my hypnotherapy toolkit to draw upon. These are skills that I will carry throughout life with me, so thank you!”
